Type of Migraine

BOTOX® is FDA-approved to help people who suffer from migraines 14 or more days per month, lasting four hours or more at each occurrence. In our experience at The Migraine Institute, BOTOX® injections have been shown to help an even larger group of migraine and tension-headache sufferers. Candidates include those who have migraines headaches associated with one or more specific trigger site.

Treatment Overview

Overview of Botox® Treatment

How does Botox® work for migraines?

Even though proven to work well, it is still not completely clear how BOTOX® targets migraines. BOTOX® is thought to block certain molecules, called neurotransmitters, from activating the faulty nerve endings associated with the migraine trigger. BOTOX® may also work by relaxing certain muscles around sensitive nerves, reducing irritation.

what are the benefits of BOTOX® for migraine treatment?

Our patients have been very happy with the results of their BOTOX® treatments for migraine relief. Some of the top benefits of the non-surgical migraine treatment include:

  • BOTOX® has been clinically proven to reduce the number of days patients experience migraines.
  • BOTOX® treatments are quick and minimally invasive.
  • Patients generally experience very little discomfort from the injections.
  • BOTOX® treatments provide relief from migraine pain within 5 – 7 days.
  • Results of the treatment last around 3 months for most patients.
Can Botox® “CURE”   migraines?

For some patients, yes, BOTOX® can cure your migraines. However, for the majority of patients, BOTOX® will significantly reduce the frequency, duration, and intensity of the migraine headaches, leading to a much-improved quality of life. After BOTOX®, patients tend to require less medication and occasionally come off all medications entirely.

What are areas treated?

There are several eligible sites for BOTOX® treatment in migraine patients, including the forehead, brow, temples, back of the scalp, and neck. Depending on the individual patient’s perceived trigger points, one or more of these sites will be treated. Some patients will require treatment of all sites. At The Migraine Institute, we take a very customized approach to helping our migraine patients find relief. During your consultation with Dr. Cabin, he will evaluate your trigger points and determine the exact BOTOX® treatment plan that is best for you.

how long does the BOTOX® last?

After BOTOX® injections, patients can expect to experience relief within one week, with a peak effect around six weeks and waning effect over the following six weeks. This gives an active window of about three months. Some patients require injections every three months, while others will require more frequent injections.

will the migraine BOTOX® treatments also smooth wrinkles?

Yes! Depending on the sites injected, you can have the secondary positive effect of decreased wrinkles in the face, as this is the same BOTOX® used cosmetically. In addition to his expertise in migraine treatments, Dr. Cabin is a facial plastic surgeon and can provide his patient not only with migraine relief, but also beautiful aesthetic results from BOTOX® treatments.

Recovery

What is recovery like after BOTOX® injections?

There is no downtime after BOTOX® injections! You can return to work or your daily activities immediately after your BOTOX® treatment. Some patients may experience some mild swelling and/or redness around the injections sites, but this usually subsides in less than an hour. The only limitations are that we ask you to keep your head up (do not layi down) for about 4 hours following the treatment and not to exercise for the rest of the day.

what are the side effects of BOTOX® for migraines?

The most common side effects of  BOTOX® are:

  • Decreased facial expression
  • Temporary pain, redness and swelling at the injection site

In some cases, patients can develop a “droopy” eyelid, which typically lasts one to two weeks and can be treated with prescription eye drops. To decrease your risk of side effects, a migraine specialist, like Dr. Cabin who treats migraine patients regularly, should perform your BOTOX® injections.

Serious side effects from BOTOX® are extremely rare.

Results

Depending on the trigger sites, patients may notice improvement immediately, but it may take weeks or months until the full effect is felt. The majority of patients notice improvement two to four weeks.

Although uncommon, there is a chance your migraines will not significantly improve. This is usually related to additional trigger sites that are now noticeable after the removable of the primary sites, and can usually be treated with an additional procedure.
