I can’t tell you how many times I bring up BOTOX with migraine patients and they respond: “But what about all the needles? I can’t possibly handle that.”
Its true. When BOTOX was FDA-approved for migraine headaches in 2010, the treatment protocol – basically, the way the FDA studied it – was by injecting it throughout the face and neck, with 25 separate injections in 7 different areas! I get it – that’s a lot of pokes, and would make anyone think twice about whether its truly worth it.
But do we really need so many needles? Not necessarily.
Given our understanding about sensory triggers of migraines, and how they differ from person to person, we find that many patients don’t require the full treatment. With a good history and examination, certain patients can get the same improvement from more targeted injections. Less needles. Less pain. Same improvement.
In addition, at The Migraine Institute, we’ve adopted injection techniques that require less pokes, and use the smallest needles available. We feel that if you’re suffering from a condition defined by pain, everything should be done to minimize the pain of the treatment.
