What Is Botox for Migraines?

Botox is a neurotoxin derived from Clostridium botulinum bacteria. Small amounts of Botox can be injected into the skin and temporarily prevent nerve cell signals from reaching the muscles. When this happens, Botox paralyzes the muscles and reduces abnormal muscle contraction.

Although Botox injections are commonly associated with non-invasive facial rejuvenation procedures, Botox has been used in other medical applications, including migraine treatments. The Migraine Institute offers Botox injections to individuals who have received a chronic migraine diagnosis from a neurologist and find that migraine medications cause intolerable side effects or fail to alleviate migraine pain.

Dr. Jonathan Cabin of The Migraine Institute is a board-certified head and neck surgeon with dual-subspecialty training in facial plastic and reconstructive surgery. This unique expertise enables Dr. Cabin to determine if Botox injections can help chronic migraine patients address their migraine symptoms.

BOTOX® for Migraine Treatment: What You Need to Know

Before the application of Botox, Dr. Cabin conducts an in-depth patient assessment. First, Dr. Cabin requests a patient’s medical history and performs a physical examination. He learns about a patient’s migraine symptoms and uses specialized tests to determine the underlying causes of an individual’s migraines. If Dr. Cabin determines a patient is a candidate for Botox injections, he then crafts a custom treatment plan. Dr. Cabin also reviews all aspects of a Botox treatment plan to ensure that a patient understands the treatment protocol and long-term benefits.

How Does Botox® Work for Migraine Relief?

Botox® injections have been shown to help reduce the frequency, duration and intensity of migraines in a certain population of patients. Although proven to work well, it is still not entirely clear how Botox® actually helps migraines. One leading theory is that, by weakening certain muscles, Botox® can reduce muscular pressure on certain trigger nerves. Botox® may also work on the actual nerves, themselves.

Benefits of BOTOX® for Migraines

The benefits of using Botox® to treat migraine headaches include:

  • Minimally Invasive: At The Migraine Institute, Botox® is administered using the smallest needles in the smallest number of locations. Aside from occasional minor discomfort right after treatment, patients experience no long-term pain or discomfort
  • Fast Migraine Relief: With Botox®, individuals typically experience reduction in migraine frequency, duration and intensity within five to seven days of treatment.
  • Long-Lasting: Most patients reap the benefits of a single Botox® treatment for about three months, sometimes longer.

Can Botox® “CURE” migraines?

With routine administration, Botox® has helped many patients significantly reduce migraine symptom, usually decreasing the duration, frequency and intensity of migraine headaches. Some patients will experience zero migraines while the Botox® is active. Regardless, Botox® frequently leads to the reduction or elimination of need for migraine medications.

What to Expect from Botox for Migraines

A typical Botox for migraines procedure can be performed in just minutes, and there are few side effects associated with treatment. Plus, a single Botox for migraine treatment may deliver results that last up to four months.

Of course, Botox is not a permanent solution for migraine pain. If an individual continues to experience migraine pain after Botox injections or is searching for a permanent migraine treatment, he or she may want to consider migraine surgery.

What is recovery like after BOTOX® injections?

There is no downtime after BOTOX® injections! You can return to work or your daily activities immediately after your BOTOX® treatment. Some patients may experience some mild swelling and/or redness around the injections sites, but this usually subsides in less than an hour. The only limitations are that we ask you to keep your head up (do not lay down) for about 4 hours following the treatment and not to exercise for the rest of the day.

What are the side effects of BOTOX® for migraines?

The most common side effects of BOTOX® are:

  • Decreased facial expression
  • Temporary pain, redness and swelling at the injection site

In some cases, patients can develop a “droopy” eyelid, which typically lasts one to two weeks and can be treated with prescription eye drops. To decrease your risk of side effects, a migraine specialist, like Dr. Cabin who treats migraine patients regularly, should perform your BOTOX® injections.

Serious side effects from BOTOX® are extremely rare.

Depending on the trigger sites, patients may notice improvement immediately, but it may take weeks or months until the full effect is felt. The majority of patients notice improvement two to four weeks.

Although uncommon, there is a chance your migraines will not significantly improve. This is usually related to additional trigger sites that are now noticeable after the removable of the primary sites, and can usually be treated with an additional procedure.
